Different Types of Engineering

Engineering is a term that refers to a wide range of field of study that covers a lot applications, industries, and specialization. It combines science, mathematics, and technology to come up with solutions for the problems of the world and make our lives easier. In fact, engineering is behind almost everything around us.

There are four major engineering fields: chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. Each of these disciplines is further divided into more subtypes; some are combination of more than one major discipline.

Chemical Engineering


As the name suggests, it is a practical application of chemistry in the fields of healthcare, food processing, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, biotechnology, environmental studies, and safety industries. Chemical engineers focus on large scale transformation or study of chemicals, which sets them apart from chemists who are concerned with small amounts of the substances.

Civil Engineering


            It is one of the oldest if not the oldest field in engineering. Civil engineers are responsible for the infrastructures such as bridges, roads and buildings around. They are also the ones who are in charge of creating our water and energy systems. Geometry is the core and foundation of this particular discipline. In cases of natural disaster, civil engineers take care of the renovation and rebuilding of damaged infrastructures.

Electrical Engineering


Electrical engineering is concerned with the technology of electricity and its applications. Electrical, hydro, wind and solar energy are some of the various energy forms, and electrical engineers are the ones who develop technologies to utilize them. Mathematics and physics are the most important foundation of this field.

Mechanical Engineering


This is arguably the field that is the most diverse and covers the widest range of studies. It requires various skills such as scientific, mathematic, analytic, and designing. Mechanical engineers are in charge of manufacturing and production of mechanical parts from small parts to large whole systems.

As mentioned above, there are more sub disciplines in engineering that falls under one or more major field. Here some to name a few:

Aerospace Engineering


In this specialization, engineers design and manufacture aircrafts, airplanes, satellites, and missiles. There are two areas in aerospace industry: aeronautical engineering and astronautical engineering. The former focuses on the technology of flying within the Earth’s atmosphere, while the former is concerned with flying both within and beyond the Earth’s atmosphere.

Agricultural Engineering


It is the application of the combination of civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering to agriculture. Its main goal is to reduce operators’ work while gaining efficiency at the same time. Agricultural engineering is also one of the most quickly progressing fields in engineering.

Applications Engineering


Applications engineers evaluate, monitor, and assure the quality of products or services offered by manufacturing companies. They also discuss with the client about their needs and requirements to make sure the company meets their standards. This field requires good communication, math, and cooperation skills; they usually work with the company’s manufacturing, sales, and customer service departments.

Architectural Engineering


It uses the combination of civil and mechanical engineering skills. Architectural engineers usually work in a team with architects. While architects focus on the aesthetics of the building, architectural engineers focus on the mathematical and scientific aspects.

Audio Engineering


Audio engineers are behind the music we hear. They manipulate, mix, equalize, and finally reproduce the sound of music; they also work on the technical aspect of sound recording.

Automotive Engineering


It is a combination of elements of mechanical, electrical electronic, software, and safety engineering to design, develop, manufacture, and sell land transportation vehicles such as motorcycles, automobiles, and trucks.

Biological and Biosystems Engineering


This field of engineering studies the footprint that the various new inventions leave in the environment. As much as possible, they make sure that these inventions have no or minimal harmful effect to the nature.

Biomedical Engineering


It is an integrated study of engineering, medicine, and biology to produce solutions for complex and important health issues. Biomedical engineers are the ones behind dialysis machines and life support systems.

Building Engineering


It is a sub-discipline of civil engineering and application of engineering principles to designing, building, and maintaining a sustainable built environment.

Ceramics and Materials


It uses inorganic, non-metallic materials to form and design new products.

Commercial Engineering


It has similarity to industrial engineering, but this focuses more on marketing the product.

Computer Engineering


Computer engineers develop technologies behind the various sites and applications we use such as Google, Instagram, Spotify, etc. They are the most sought after professional today because of their innovations in technology.

Construction Engineering


A Sub-discipline of civil engineering. It involves designing and execution of blueprints of infrastructures. Construction engineers oversee and monitor the construction of the projects.

Electromechanical Systems


It focuses on design and maintenance of machines made up of both electrical and mechanical components.

Environmental Engineering


Environmental engineers come up with solutions for global environmental issues. They develop technology to produce products or equipments that has less negative impact to the environment.



Also known as cost engineers. Estimators must have background in civil engineering and construction because they are the ones who estimate the needed budget for the project.

Food Engineering


It is a multidisciplinary field that covers food processing and plant operation with the use of combined chemistry, microbiology, and physics.

Forest Engineering


It is essential to manage the forests and ensure the sustainability while allowing activities in such environments.

Geological Engineering


Geological engineers make sure that geological factors are taken into account for when starting a project.

Geomatic Engineering


This is concerned with collecting, storing, analyzing, and distribution of geographical and spatial information.



It is an area of civil engineering responsible for making sure that the rock and soil materials used in construction are of high quality.

Health and Safety Engineering


Health and safety engineers ensure the safety of the engineering project. This field requires knowledge in machinery, chemicals, software, furniture and other products to make sure that the materials they are going to use will not cause any damage to the building or injury to any people around.

Industrial/Manufacturing Engineering


It aims to improve the quality of output products through undergoing a process. Industrial engineering is also responsible for making sure that the final product’s physical property is consumer friendly.

Infrastructure Engineering


It is under civil engineering and is concerned with designing, maintaining, monitoring, and inspection of roads, bridges and other infrastructures.

Instrumentation and Control Systems Engineer


Engineers in this area ensure the safety and efficiency of equipments used in monitoring and controlling systems, machinery, and processes.

Integrated/Unified Engineering


This is a combination of different engineering disciplines for the engineers to meet the demand for skills in various areas.

Marine and Ocean Engineering


Marine engineers are responsible for the technical design and structure of marine structures. Ocean engineers’ tasks on the other hand are to lessen or minimize the impact of these structures, and of storms and other natural disasters.

Metallurgical Engineering


It deals with the collection of ores from mines and manufacturing processes. The method of harvesting is carefully studied with the aid of contour maps.

Mineral Engineering


It is similar to both metallurgical and mining engineering and is often associated with them.

Mining Engineering


It deals with the extraction of metallic ores, non-metallic/industrial minerals, and fossil fuels from the economically mineable part of a mineral deposit. It falls under mechanical engineering.

Naval Architecture


This field of engineering is concerned with the design, building process, maintenance, and operation of maritime transportation.

Nuclear Engineering


It applies the principles of nuclear physics to come up with ways to make us of nuclear energy and radiation.

As the demand for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Programs continues to grow, universities now offer online courses for engineering degrees. It is to make education more accessible for people who do not have enough time to study in a traditional university.

Petroleum, Oil, and Gas Engineering


The role of this field in engineering is to manage these resources in our developing and industrialized kind of society today where energy has become a necessity to a sustainable life.

Planning Engineering


Planning engineers are responsible for making time frames and that the project follows the schedule and meets the deadline.

Power Engineering


It is under electrical and energy engineering and the field which transmits, distributes, and utilizes electricity and devices which uses it.

Project Management


Project managers can organize and manage multidisciplinary engineering projects. Basic knowledge and skills on complex engineering, management method, and project organization are necessary.

Telecoms, Digital Communication and Networks Engineering


Engineers of this specialization are the ones who develop the networks, and internet that allows us now to communication with people away from us. This field is a combination of electrical and computer engineering.

Transportation Engineering


A subfield of civil engineering, this area of study is behind the modes of transportation we use. They take into account its safety, efficiency, comfort when designing and planning it, they are also the ones who monitor and operate these transportation systems. This includes railway engineering which is responsible for all kinds of railway systems.

Water Resources Engineering


It is concerned with collection, storage, management, purification, and distributing water as a natural resource to consumers. It is a sub-discipline of civil engineering, and also called Hydrological Engineering.
