Different Types of Engineering

Engineering is a term that refers to a wide range of field of study that covers a lot applications, industries, and specialization. It combines science, mathematics, and technology to come up with solutions for the problems of the world and make our lives easier. In fact, engineering is behind almost everything around us.

There are four major engineering fields: chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. Each of these disciplines is further divided into more subtypes; some are combination of more than one major discipline.

Chemical Engineering

As the name suggests, it is a practical application of chemistry in the fields of healthcare, food processing, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, biotechnology, environmental studies, and safety industries. Chemical engineers focus on large scale transformation or study of chemicals, which sets them apart from chemists who are concerned with small amounts of the substances.

Civil Engineering

            It is one of the oldest if not the oldest field in engineering. Civil engineers are responsible for the infrastructures such as bridges, roads and buildings around. They are also the ones who are in charge of creating our water and energy systems. Geometry is the core and foundation of this particular discipline. In cases of natural disaster, civil engineers take care of the renovation and rebuilding of damaged infrastructures.

Electrical Engineering

Electrical engineering is concerned with the technology of electricity and its applications. Electrical, hydro, wind and solar energy are some of the various energy forms, and electrical engineers are the ones who develop technologies to utilize them. Mathematics and physics are the most important foundation of this field.

Mechanical Engineering

This is arguably the field that is the most diverse and covers the widest range of studies. It requires various skills such as scientific, mathematic, analytic, and designing. Mechanical engineers are in charge of manufacturing and production of mechanical parts from small parts to large whole systems.

As mentioned above, there are more sub disciplines in engineering that falls under one or more major field. Here some to name a few:

Aerospace Engineering

In this specialization, engineers design and manufacture aircrafts, airplanes, satellites, and missiles. There are two areas in aerospace industry: aeronautical engineering and astronautical engineering. The former focuses on the technology of flying within the Earth’s atmosphere, while the former is concerned with flying both within and beyond the Earth’s atmosphere.

Agricultural Engineering

It is the application of the combination of civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering to agriculture. Its main goal is to reduce operators’ work while gaining efficiency at the same time. Agricultural engineering is also one of the most quickly progressing fields in engineering.

Applications Engineering

Applications engineers evaluate, monitor, and assure the quality of products or services offered by manufacturing companies. They also discuss with the client about their needs and requirements to make sure the company meets their standards. This field requires good communication, math, and cooperation skills; they usually work with the company’s manufacturing, sales, and customer service departments.

Architectural Engineering

Audio Engineering
