27 Different Types of Makeup

There are a lot of reasons why people, especially women, wear makeup on their everyday lives. They use it to hide the ‘flaws’ on their faces (wrinkles, acne, eczema, etc.) that cause them insecurities, and to enhance their best features.

Some apply it to look younger, or older, of course depending on their age. Many consider it art which they use as a medium to express themselves.

Sometimes they use it if they want to look attractive and want to impress a certain guy they like, but more often, they just do it for themselves. Some wear makeup to make themselves feel more beautiful, boost their self-esteem, or help with anxiety. Some do it for fun.

While some say the benefits of not wearing makeup are too great to ignore, makeup for many, is a source of confidence.

1. Face Primer


It is the first to apply before putting on foundation. Using face primer is optional is very beneficial. It serves as a protective layer, especially if you have an oily type of skin.

Face primer smooths out the texture of the skin and eases the application of regular foundation. It also helps your makeup to last longer on your face.

2. Eye Primer


Eye primer serves the same function as the face primer except that it is used on the eyelids. It prevents fading and wrinkling, and holds the eye shadow longer and it makes it more vibrant. Not applying eye primer might cause your makeup to smudge later on.

3. Lipstick


It is made from different components such as pigments, oil, waxes, etc that changes the color and texture of the lips. Some lipsticks contain protective features as well.

It is possibly the most essential makeup product for women; wearing lipstick is the easiest and quickest way of changing a person’s look.

4. Lip Gloss


Lip gloss is usually a liquid or soft solid makeup that is used to give a glossy appearance and enhance the color of the lips. Different types of lip gloss give a different look.

There are clear, translucent, and opaque which can give frosted, glittered, glassy, or metallic finish.

5. Lip Liner


Lip liner can function as a primer to your lipstick. It helps the lipstick last longer, prevents color bleeding, helps to make your lips look bigger or thinner (depending on how you use it), and can give a deeper and richer color to your lips.

Use of lip liner is not necessary but makeup artists recommend it.

6. Lip Plumper


Lip plumper is a cosmetic product that contains menthol or camphor to cause slight swelling of lips to make them look fuller. This also moisturizes the lips and reduces the visible fine lines in the area.

A lip plumper should be reapplied throughout the day to maintain its effect.

7. Lip Balm


It is a wax-like product that is applied on the lips to keep the moisture. The skin on the lips is thinner compared to other parts of the body that is why it is the first to show signs of dryness.

Dry air and cold temperature cause takes the moisture away from the body therefore causing the lips to look chapped and dry.

8. Lip Primer


Lip primer acts like the foundation of the lips. It is applied before putting on lipstick or any lip products. It is usually clear and it makes the texture of the lips smoother. It holds lipstick and other lip cosmetics longer as well.

9. Lip Booster


It helps in regenerating collagen and hydrating the lips. Lip booster makes the lips look softer, smoother, and fuller by maintaining moisture balance and by diminishing the lip creases. It also has a cooling effect that gives increases the lips’ volume.

10. Lip Stain


It can either be water or gel based and may contain alcohol to keep the stain on the lips. It temporarily saturates the lips instead of coloring it with wax, people use lip stain as an alternative to lipstick. It comes in different types such as brush-on, marker tip, gel pumps, cream or pot.

11. Foundation

After primer, foundation is the first to apply on the face; it is used to even out the color of the skin. Foundation can be liquid, cream, powder, or a light fluffy mousse which all serves the same function.

Concealer is a little similar to foundation only it is thicker and usually lighter in color. It is used to cover imperfections, blemishes, or any marks on the face whether from a small scar or acne caused by birth control pills. Face powder is put on after the foundation to set it and gives a matte finish. It can also help in concealing small blemishes. Face powder can be reapplied throughout the day on oily skin to prevent it from looking shiny. It comes in two different types: loose powder and pressed powder.

14. BB Cream

BB (Beauty Balm or Beauty Booster) Cream is like foundation, concealer, and moisturizer combined in one. Some brands also have SPF and anti-ageing contents. It is an all-in-one product and a must have in every makeup kit.

15. Rouge or Blush

As the name suggests, it is used to color the cheeks for a more vibrant and youthful look. It can be applied in many different ways depending on what look the user wants to achieve.

16. Contour Powder/Cream


This product is used to change the appearance of the person by creating an illusion of a different shape of the face. It can give you your desired shape of the face by modifying its features.

17. Highligher

Highlighters can also be used for contouring, but its main function is to emphasize the high points of the face. In addition, it gives a glowing effect to the face.

Some contains shimmer that will make you shine that will cause ‘unnatural’ look, brands like that should be applied minimally. For a more natural look, a lighter foundation or concealer can be used instead.

18. Bronzer

Bronzer is used to make you look tan. Proper application of it will give you a sun-kissed glow that looks natural.

19. Masacra

It is used to give your lashes a fuller look. It is a liquid that is used to darken, thicken, and lengthen your eyelashes. Most mascaras are brown or black, for natural colors, but it is also available in other colors such as blue, pink, and violet.

Newly produced ones may contain ingredients that can make lashes grow thicker and longer. For those who have allergies and are prone to sudden tears, there are waterproof ones available.

20. Eyelash Adhesive/Glue


As the name suggest, it is used to secure your false eyelashes in place. It can come either in clear or colored formula. There are waterproof ones available to make sure you can still have your falsies on even if your face gets wet.

21. Eyebrow Pencil


It is a cosmetic product used to define the shape of your eyebrows. It also gives them a richer color. It looks like an ordinary pencil but contains makeup pigments in place of lead.

22. Eyebrow Wax


It is used to achieve the eyebrow shape you want by pulling off eyebrow hair.

23. Eyebrow Gels


It is used to keep your eyebrows in place for a long time. People who already have thick eyebrows can use clear gels, while those who have thin brows can opt to use colored ones to enhance color while shaping them.

24. Eyebrow Powder


Eyebrow powder serves the same purpose as eyebrow pencil, it is used to define and shape your brows. A brush is used to apply the powder to the eyebrows.

25. Nail Polish


Nail polish is a liquid, usually colored, used to paint the nails. Colorless ones are used to protect and thicken the nail itself. Instead of simply applying single colored nail polish, many women now do nail arts to decorate their nails.

26. Setting Spray


Using setting spray is the last step in putting on makeup. It is meant to keep your makeup intact the whole day after spraying in on top of your finished makeup.

27. Setting Powder


It is identical with the names “finishing powder” and “HD powder”. It is applied after the foundation to ‘set’ it and make it last longer. It also reduces shine caused by oil on skin.
